at all, but it stats up with xmms anyway

You probably have AudioCompress installed. Because xmms doesn't provide
a mechanism for notifying

click on the
Effect/ General Plugins tab, select KOMPRESSOR
CRUSH XMMS from the
Effect Plugins menu, then click the Configure button
right below that menu.
Select the Monitor tab and disable Show
