For some reason, after saving a spreadsheet in the Gnumeric XML format,
the .gnumeric extension it has seemed to be associated with Archiver
instead of Gnumeric. Is this something fixable by MandrakeSoft or is
this a KDE issue?

Looks like you didn't configure the file associations properly.
(More exactly that the DefaultApp field for the mimetypes is missing).
Those mimetypes files (mimelnk/*/*.kdelnk) are not touched by the "menu"
thing, right ?
In this case I think it's just a problem in your configuration.

Thanks for your input David, that's what I was looking for as far as
fixing the problem. I would say however, this shouldn't have to be done
for every file every time you load this system on a new computer -
should it? (I use several different computers.) I don't remember ever
having to do it

I've been noticing with hydrogen, file types are understood but they
don't automatically open with their corresponding program. For example;
with an mp3 file I see a 'kmp3' icon in my /home/$user directory - kde
knows that .mp3 files go with kmp3. When I click on the file
