OK, I figured out what is causing this: make. I downgraded make to the one supplied with 7.0 (make-3.77-12mdk) on my alpha, and it built fine: Executing(%clean): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.81595 + umask 022 + cd /users/stefan/RPM/BUILD + cd gtk+-1.2.7 + rm -rf /var/tmp/gtk-1.2.7-root + exit
