Hi

Version:
Mandrake Linux Cooker-i586 20030223 8:04
/ChangeLog/1.791/Fri Feb 21 21:58:09 2003//

Very nice installation.
Main language Swedish and fellow one am-English => UTF8
to my understanding this is the 'root' to many of the pbs as the mapping to
and from UTF8 causes link pbs as the command going through is not always
correct.

I have an ISA card for sound, a SB AWE64, that is fine in an installation with
am-English as main language and swedish as second, today no fine sound as
soundconfig could not find the 'voice of Linus'.

Installation:
When asking for which partitions to format, my /mnt/dos partition is set to be
formatted. I have an XP installation to play DiabloII on that one. And I have
20 partitions so that one is out of sight if you don't use the slider to see
it.
I think this is dangerous for Windows testers.

After formatting the installer is showing a small window, probably saying
"looking for packages to install". This one is ignited and closed down I
think 20 times, as I think that the installer is writing to fstab in between
and then checking the next partition. Looks very much like a bad chinese
small bomb parade.

Packages to install:
As this is testing I say yes to all chunks of packages on the left + firewall
and individual packages.

I have to add the following:
My video card is a NVIDIA so I have to add kernel-souce and the
ncurses5-devel. What are the coming Windows users going to say about modern
graphics capacity in default Linux?

According to all security discussions to day it is stated that no firewall is
secure for ever. So the remedy is to have snort looking for an intruder
within the local lan. I add prelude for being sure that none has been looking
into the lan.

In the Gazette and other writings mc is adviced to newcomers for simple
console affairs. I add this one and lynx to be able to read html files within
it. The look of mc in console mood is like being at a font carneval = pure
shit, but within a console in KDE it is perfect.

I personally add Lyx for my own writing.

In services I didn't try installation of printer as that has been much shit in
the other installation from yesterday. To newcomers I think that netfs should
be set to off, I add gpm and set dm to off.

After installation:

Looking at the installation messages going by in swedish and every character
of , o with two dots, a with a circle and a with two dots was given as two
characters often the original character but in large sice followed by what I
call an 'IBM graphical character'.

I have installed my old 100 MHz Zip drive to see what happens. I have no icon
what so ever on my KDE desktop of removable media. In fstab it is given as
none /mnt/zip supermount
dev=/dev/sda4,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=8
50 0 0

I did run printerdrake after installation and it finds my HP 710C OK. But
tries to install for HP 712C, which I changed. But no printing of testpage.

I have a done a "strace -o trace.it printerdrake" on it and the file in gz is
160K and I dont know what commands are used for sending the file to the
printer. Here is from messages of the try tp print:
feb 23 13:27:33 localhost printerdrake[3339]: running: /sbin/modprobe -n
parport_probe

Printer version
feb 23 13:29:25 localhost printerdrake[3339]: default cancel_clicked

So pnm2ppa.conf cant find the fine printer.

No sound as from above.

Startx makes it into IceWM, nice view but not right.
