The startup for KDE3 MUST put the path to KDE3 FIRST. Otherwise you'll be running all the KDE stuff from /usr/bin, which is KDE2, which won't work, especially for all the "control" stuff like kdeinit and such. You must have started KDE3 after logging in on a console, instead of from the [xgk]dm
