Now that *exactly* was a solution R.I.P. and me didn't come up with :)) A
good one, though.

But we are just doing headless and useless discussion anyway :)
Can't change anything.. :(

Hmm, oh, yes, you are right. Didn't think about this. I think your first
approach would be the best way: Don't install it as
/usr/share/doc/kern
Yes, but do you know the workload needed if you try to change
%%docdir.

Yes, I know - and that's why I said that it should not be put in
/usr/share/doc/kernel-2.4.2, b
Nope, it's this /usr/share/doc/kernel-2.4.2/README that's causing
conflict! Please refer to previous posts if you are not sure.

Okay, I see your point. But then /usr/share/doc/kernel-2.4.2/README shoul
OK. just a matter of taste. But I'd prefer removing all duplicate
files rather than keeping multiple copies of the same file if not
necessary.

Then it should be removed completely, as in (1):
$ ls -l /usr/share/doc/kernel-2.4.2/README /usr/src/linux/README

Wrong - rpm -ivh kernel RPM's. Never -Uvh 'em before you know that they
work.

And if the new kernel is broken, like say the one a few revs back that
barfed on aic7xxx controllers? What do we do then seeing as we wiped
out the last known good kernel with the rpm -U?

Hmmm ! You're brave ! Surely rpm -ivh, test new kernel, if (ok) rpm -e old ?

Hmmm maybe you're true. But seems the ONLY conflict comes from this
README file.
Several fixes possible:
1) remove the README from packaging altogether
2) rename README to README-2.4.2-something in packaging
3) rpm -ivh --force ^_^

Cooker has been nice until now because you always could install several kernel
packages at the same time without conflict. Don't stop it now.
