I think you should use kgcc for kernel compilation.

OK, downloaded and installed kernel-2.4.5-8, along with headers and
pcmcia packages. No quickcam driver. Doing a file search for any file
anywhere on the machine found three files on the WIndows side with the
word "quickcam" in it, but nothing whatsoever on the linux side.
