I was able to work around this by doing two things: 1. Deactivate any other interfaces that have a default route configured. In my case a local ethernet lan, thus do "ifdown eth0" 2. Uncheck the option in PPP to add a default route after connection is established. I do this manually afterwards. This started happening since ppp-2.3.9-1mdk for me.
