after I installed kernel-2.3.99 (from contrib) I had the same problem.
But I easily edited /etc/securetty file and root on VirtConsole works again.
My /etc/securetty has:
#
tty1 #for old kernels (without devfs support)
1 #for ones with devfs
tty2
2
...
#
Got the same problem.. I need to "su" before login as root! Is it a new
feature security feature disabling root passwd on console?
