I have exactly the same problems.

I just patched unusal_devs.h to get my camera working as usb-storage.
Else usb works fine here.

When mandrake is booting up, the 'checking for new hardware' section
fails. Once gnome comes up, The USB controller (82440MX) is detected but
the usb devices are not.
Opening a terminal session, the output from hardrake2 (its a long one):
