LinuxPPC is certainly no longer the benchmark for PPC Linux distributions.  My current Mandrake install splits a 5.2G partition into two partitions, one 3.1G, the other 2.1G.  I don't believe YDL 2.0 has any limitation on the size of partitions, either.  With the current installer, it is best to
