I think you should check you JAVA_HOME and the folders under the JAVA_HOME
like this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] MyMapreduce]$ echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_07
[EMAIL PROTECTED] MyMapreduce]$ ls $JAVA_HOME
bin COPYRIGHT demo include jre lib LICENSE man README.html sample
src.zip THIRDPAR

I was trying get the namenode formattedand I keep getting this Java VM
init error.
The only configuration I have made is in hadoop-env.sh as said in the docs:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/jre
but everytime I do "bin/hadoop namenode -format" I get this error:
