The short answer - >nostalgia< and >spirit< .
A little bit longer answer (for those with patience);
You may take the following lines with a grain of salt, or . you can choose
to give it a though, a moment of reflection, if you want.

I think that is correct.
What is your goal here? I like old hardware too, but at some point, it's a
lot more trouble than it's worth to keep these
Not to rain on your parade but currently I see this system going for
$400 on ebay or $130 for the board and am curious...what is compelling
for you and this? I did not know when I first started coreboot but you
can buy faster and newer open source firmware boards for less money -
stuff that you
Dear all,
I was politely reminded by a member of coreboot mailing list (>off the

sounded a bit harsh; hence I feel obliged to elaborate, just to be sure.

Hello Jonathan,
Your response surely came as a blessing ... reading it halfway through, I
was just about to throw the towel, but when I read the rest, it truly made
my day. So it must have been just recently, that the coreboot support for
the AMD K8 (Fam0Fh) was deprecated, as the board is
Hello David,
First of all I'd like to thank you for your reassurance, that I seem to be
on the right path towards the ultimate goal - having a coreboot flashed onto
a marvelous piece of technology (Sun U40 M2), that was retired (IMHO) way
prematurely by the profit driven minds (lacking any
The coreboot support for Ultra 40 M2 was for Fam0Fh processors only. As
support for Fam0Fh processors was removed so was the board support.
I've never got around to upstreaming my Fam10h port.. I could probably
push it out somewhere if someone wants to polish it up. I refreshed it
only a couple

Thanks Peter,
It doesn't sound half as bad I feared it would, honestly. The way I see it,
this is what I can and should do:
- Acquire the Ultra 40 M2 machine (just bite the bullet, as there's no other
way around.), to be able to run the tests in a first place;
- Buy a couple of blank BIOS

Don't hold your breath.
Boards are removed in master if noone contributes test results for
a long enough time.
The code of course remains

Greetings everyone,
To begin with - I solemnly swear that I did my »homework«, to the best of my
abilities, by digging long and hard through all the available sources
pertaining the coreboot project (coreboot.org website, mailing lists,
announcements, release notes, GitHib pages, etc.).
Hello,
I'm working on a coreboot port to the Sun Ultra 40 M2. This is an MCP55
based dual socket Opteron system with two memory banks per node (four slots
each.)
It's currently in a dual dualcore configuration with 8GB of DDR2 memory,
two 2GB sticks per bank.
I'm using the Tyan s2912 mainboard
Hey all,
I know the Sun Ultra 40 has a coreboot image available but is anyone
working on the Sun Ultra 40 M2 ?
Sun / Oracle's latest BIOS for this unit will not support quad or six
core (or dual threaded) Opterons. The chipset is definitely capable
however. A BIOS with a microcode update would

You will have to make a new port. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.
Thanks,
