Sam, you are right, this is some kind of bug in gcc (as gcc also reports
when the compile fails). But it would be nice to be able to work around this
bug (gcc changes are very slow, errors hard to trace ...).

Compiling a kernel has never resulted in an error like this and also other
heavy stuff (like the FC5 package of OpenLDAP) compiles without problems.
But hey, I will give the hardware a good look (and test) and see if
something is wrong.
