I've had this problem too. For me, this works as follows:
It is both in 0.39.2, and 0.39.3. The spin is somewhere in rfc1035an.c, and
has something to do with formatting an ip6 address for display.
It can be circumvented by setting --without-ipv6 on the configure.

This is exactly the same for me. I attempted to upgrade to 0.39.3 and
the latest snapshot. Neither would deliver mail outside of
