I ended up deleting the test account I was using (sandy) and creating a
new one (alex) - both were just unix accounts, ie adduser - and it's
working now.
So the reason I had nothing listening on port 25 is that after I had
enabled esmtp and my results didn't change I put it back to the default
1)
#ps -ef | esmtp will tell if your smtp is running. There should be a
process ./courieresmtp
if not, go to the bottom of etc/esmtpd and uncomment ESMTPDSTART=YES
2)
The message probably was not in the users INBOX because it was in a
file called Maildir in the location where courier _thinks_
Courier is definately started because I do a service courier restart
after every change I make.
As to smtp you said "webmail does not use SMTP to send a message" and
then "But did you enable SMTP at all? "
AHHH - I'd cry but I'm a baseball player and as we all know there
is no crying in

If on the box, I "telnet testmail.myschool.edu smtp" or "telnet 127.0.0.1
25" it gives me a connection refused - which of course is a big problem
