I ended up deleting the test account I was using (sandy) and creating a new one (alex) - both were just unix accounts, ie adduser - and it's working now. So the reason I had nothing listening on port 25 is that after I had enabled esmtp and my results didn't change I put it back to the default

1) #ps -ef | esmtp will tell if your smtp is running. There should be a process ./courieresmtp if not, go to the bottom of etc/esmtpd and uncomment ESMTPDSTART=YES 2) The message probably was not in the users INBOX because it was in a file called Maildir in the location where courier _thinks_

Courier is definately started because I do a service courier restart after every change I make. As to smtp you said "webmail does not use SMTP to send a message" and then "But did you enable SMTP at all? " AHHH - I'd cry but I'm a baseball player and as we all know there is no crying in
