Mondex isn't dead in Canada it seems. Though I've had no word on the NBTel/Royal Bank partnership in New Brunswick, it appears that yet another trial will roll out, this time in Sherbrooke Quebec. -M Taylor Source: www.mondex.ca SHERBROOKE (April 20, 1999) - Mondex Canada announced today that it is in the final stages of its preparations to introduce Mondex electronic cash (e-cash) to the Sherbrooke (Quebec) region later this summer. Mondex will begin to be available starting in June with wide availability of Mondex e-cash planned for late summer. Mondex Canada and participating financial institutions in the Sherbrooke program, Mouvement des caisses Desjardins and Royal Bank, have been in the region for the last few months meeting with City officials, merchants and other local organizations to plan for the deployment of the electronic cash product. In the coming weeks, Mondex will be tested by both participating financial institutions, including some employees and 12 local merchants. In June, Royal Bank and Desjardins will begin to offer Mondex to their customers and install Mondex terminals in merchant locations in the Sherbrooke region (including the cities of Sherbrooke, Saint-Élie-d'Orford, Ascot, Rock Forest, Lennoxville and Fleurimont). This process will continue through the summer. At summer's end, Mondex will be offered widely to Sherbrooke citizens and the program will begin its full implementation. "This is a very exciting stage in Mondex's development in the Sherbrooke region," said Michel Thessereault, Community Relations, Quebec Region, Mondex Canada. "Mondex Canada and participating financial institutions are building the infrastructure that will support the full-scale Sherbrooke program as it is introduced in the months ahead. We will be making more announcements of our progress in the coming weeks."
