Yes, I had CrystalSpaceRoot value set as per manual.

Having some trouble getting celstart and CEL demo apps to run on OSX
using cs + cel 1.2 got from svn.
If I try running celstart either by double-clicking on the
celstart-1.2.app or from the command line i get it to launch the
start screen but fail when selecting the demo. Whatever dem
