I was wondering if someone could help? Why does the ;hover image cut out the
background image when in the hover state? Any help would be greatly
appreciated, thanks.

Your :hover image is too short. It is only 100px and some of the navigation
links are much longer. You should also change the :hover from li to a if you
want to support older versions of IE.

Comment out the following declarations like this:
.nav ul li
{
/* background-image: url("images/header_bg.jpg");
background-repeat: repeat-x; */
...
and add this
.nav ul
{
background: url("images/header_bg.jpg") repeat-x;
overflow:hidden;
}
