}}}>Begin Counter-Protesters Say 'Zionism' to Blame for Mid-East Violence By Matt Pyeatt CNSNews.com Staff Writer April 15, 2002 Washington (CNSNews.com) - With Palestinian flags waving, a group of Orthodox Jews gathered with several Palestinian Muslim women Monday to protest Israel's behavior in the Middle-East crisis. Rabbi Yisrael Dovid Weiss, a Monsey, N.Y. Orthodox rabbi said the group wanted to "proclaim to the world that this tremendous rally that is supposedly representing Judaism is false." Weiss argued that God forbade the Jewish people from establishing their own state, and that the creation of a Jewish state is reserved for the Messiah. Weiss also said it was possible for the Jews to live peacefully with the Arabs if "Zionists" would quit causing trouble. "It is false to say that we cannot live peacefully," he said. "All the anti-Semitism, all the bombers and everything, is a direct cause of Zionism. Every drop of bloodshed, whether it be Palestinians, whether it be Jewish, is totally a direct cause of Zionism. This must stop. The world must understand you are not helping Jewish people by backing the Zionist state," Weiss said. Zionism, according to the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, is the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. "[Zionists] are the cause of the bombers," Weiss said. "What we must do is point the finger at Zionists and say, 'you are the cause.'" Weiss said achieving peace was less important than separating the ideas of "Zionism" from Judaism. "We came here to proclaim the true Jewish view. Whether, politically, we can answer how peace can come about is irrelevant to this basic issue," he said. At one point during their counter-protest, Weiss and his group was confronted and spat on by a participant from the pro-Israel rally. Following the incident, Weiss and the others were protected by a Capitol Police barricade.
