Voucher Trap
On November 9th the Supreme Court declined by a vote of eight to one to
review a landmark Wisconsin case involving the expenditure of tax dollars on
tuition for poor children at private (including religious) schools in
Milwaukee. The ruling left intact a state Supreme Court decision that upheld
a law providing annual vouchers of up to $4,900 per child. Some 7,500
students are participating in the program during the current school year.

Though the High Court’s action sets no precedent, proponents of school
vouchers promptly declared it a victory. Most news accounts framed the issue
as a battle between advocates of school choice on one side and church-state
separation on the other. The most telling argument against tax-funded
voucher schemes was virtually ignored: government control that inevitably
accompanies such government assistance.

Earlier in this century, England’s socialist Fabian Society endorsed state
aid to independent Christian schools. A Fabian board member who resigned in
protest was subsequently chastised by Fabian author George Bernard Shaw for
failing to recognize that nothing would more quickly destroy such schools
than state aid, since their freedom, and eventually their faith, would
inevitably be compromised.

Theologian Dr. Rousas J. Rushdoony explains that "to channel statist or
taxed income in any way into the hands of Christian or home schools is to
surrender their freedom and to exchange it for civil controls."

Adds Rushdoony: "It is easy to understand the voucher plan by looking at
existing examples of it, such as the welfare system, food stamps, and the
like.

All have the same premise: in the name of need, freedom and responsibility
are surrendered."
