It's just a game. Or is it?

An online cartoon simulation called "Kaboom," in which the protagonist is a suicide
bomber who blows up men, women and children as well as himself, has prompted a
U.S. congresswoman to protest.

In a letter to Tom Fulp, who runs the Web site that has posted the game, Rep. Nita
Lowey of Westchester urged the webmaster to delete the game from the site
immediately.

"This distasteful and offensive game makes light of the suffering of thousands of
Americans, Israelis and others who have been victimized by suicide terrorism," the
Democrat wrote.

In a posting on his site yesterday, Fulp, 24, wrote that he would not remove
"Kaboom."

"I respect Nita's right to express her opinion on this issue," he wrote. "The mere fact
that she sent me an e-mail proves that she is more astute and involved than most
members of Congress.

"The subject matter may be uncomfortable, but it is a commentary on current events
and does not undermine the impact of what has happened. Nor does it promote hate
... but this game is too tongue-in-cheek to warrant that response."

The simplistic game features a cartoon character dressed in military green who
paces up and down a street populated by strolling people. When the player clicks a
mouse button, the bomber opens his shirt and explodes. A scorecard flashes on the
screen, showing the number of victims killed and injured.

In a Web profile, the developer of the game describes himself as a 21-year-old male
from Detroit. "My game is not intended to hurt anyone's feelings nor did I intend to
glamorize suicide bombing, in fact my intentions are quite the opposite," he wrote in
a posting. "I wish to portray suicide bombers as murderers and to make the act look
as despicable as possible..."

A statement yesterday by the Jewish Defense League condemned the game and
called for it to be "removed from the market and banned from the Internet. It's an
incitement to murder Jews and Israelis."

Dozens of the Web site's readers posted notes on the site yesterday, most
supporting the content as freedom of speech. "If you want to complain," wrote one, it
should be to the Israelis and Palestinians "because they are the ones who have been
killing each other for hundreds of years."
