From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (FDNY Sucks) I work for the New York City Fire Department EMS. Our union DC 37 Local 2507 has obtained copies of two administrative subpoenas served on the home office of America On Line in Dulles, Virginia requesting the identities behind two screen names allegedly used by members of the FDNY*EMS Command. The New York City Fire Department's Bureau of Investigations and Trials (BITS) states that they are conducting an internal investigation of violation of departmental rules and regulations regarding the personal conduct of EMS workers who post on the internet while off duty. AOL is complying with the subpoena requests although they were not signed by a judge, and is forwarding the identities to FDNY BITS. Our union DC 37 Local 2507 is extremely concerned about the free speech issues raised here and the unions lawyers are looking into all aspects of this FDNY BITS initiative. I find this action dark and ominous, and it should serve as a warning to anyone who posts on line. If FDNY can get AOL to release names without a signed order from a judge how safe are you? I believe that FDNY is using this NAZI tactic to suppress free speech on the internet by EMS workers. I feel that if AOL turned over personal information about it's members without a judges written order they should be punished with a multi million dollar lawsuit.
