Israeli helicopters have since bombed Tulkaram wounding two Palestinians and there are reports of Israeli tanks invading parts of Gaza Strip. As Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi wrote after the killing of 8 Palestinians last week in an extra judicial execution in Nablus, “The death of every person on both sides is counter-productive to long-term peace and stability in the region. Tuesday’s [assassination] will inflame the passions of a people already driven to the limits by economic suffering, daily humiliations and violence at the hands of the soldiers occupying their land, and a death toll of more than six hundred Palestinians. It will precipitate the worst kind of violence - violence that will affect both sides. Palestinians as a whole cannot be held responsible for the acts that individuals carry out because of the crime that Israel committed.” 609 Palestinians and 150 Israelis have been killed in the current conflict, and thousands have been injured, mainly Palestinians. This loss of life demonstrates that violence can only lead to violence, and the brutality of the last ten months must not continue. The cause of the conflict is the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip; an end to violence will only be achieved with an end to the occupation. More than ever before we reiterate our calls for immediate deployment of international protection force, whose presence will prevent further loss of life on both sides.
