An authors' collective of the CEO (Corporate Europe Observatory) has
just published a book on corporate EUrope. Haven't checked it out yet...
but I know the authors, and they certainly are among the people with an
insight into the intricacies of the EU's functioning and its relation to
corporations, it's invention and use of "civil society" etc. You can
find other stuff by them, including back issues of the often excellent
Corporate Europe Observer, on <http://www.xs4all.nl/~ceo/index.html>.
I'm curious to see how they deal specifically with the potentially
conspiracy theorist nature of discourses about "corporations". In any
event I'm sure the book contains a wealth of background information and
insights about the concrete functioning of the EU apparatus and the
lobbying structures in Brussels.

Regional & Global Restructuring and the Rise of Corporate Power,
published in conjunction with the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO).
The authors--Belen Balanya, Ann Doherty, Olivier Hoedeman, Adam Ma'anit
and Erik Wesselius--are all affiliated with the CEO, and the book
includes a foreword by George Monbiot.
In the wake of the storm over the WTO in Seattle, people are talking
about the ways in which corporate power is subverting democracy. What
does this mean for Europe? EUROPE INC. provides the first real insight
into the systematic ways in which transnational corporations working
through lobby groups have succeeded in influencing a wide range of
policies of the EU and other international institutions, such as the
OECD, WTO and the United Nations. The authors cover the major players in
these anti-democratic practices and analyse the structural and political
factors which have enabled corporate political power to dominate.
In their analysis of the EU's current neoliberal economic strategies
which involve promoting deregulation and privatisation in virtually all
areas and subordinating every policy field to the objective of
international competitiveness the authors focus on the activities of
corporate lobby groups and corporate state alliances. These include
bodies such as the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT), the
Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD), the International Chamber of
Commerce (ICC), and the Association for Monetary Union of Europe (AMUE).
The featured case studies examine corporate influence on transport,
biotechnology, climate change policies, as well as key economic
globalisation projects such as the Transatlantic Economic Partnership
and the Multilateral Agreement on Investment.
