 Man wins therapy lawsuit
$2.1 MILLION: Autistic man alleged therapist tried to erase part of his
 brain, make him killer

A Pierce County jury Friday awarded the family of an autistic Spokane man
$2.1 million in a lawsuit that contended his former neuropsychiatrist tried
to erase part of his brain and turn him into a trained killer.

Stephen Drummond, 30, was not present when the verdict was announced.
However, his mother, Jeanie Drummond, said she was pleased by the verdict.

"It's very fair and reasonable," she said, adding, "There's no amount of
money that can make up for his losses."

An attorney representing the estate of Gig Harbor neuropsychiatrist Donald
Dudley, who died in October, declined comment after the jury's decision.

The verdict was the fourth-largest of its kind nationally in a case
involving
psychotherapy negligence, said one of the Drummonds' attorneys.

"This record verdict demonstrates again that the legal system will enforce
the law against incompetent and dangerous psychotherapists," said
Christopher
Barden, a Salt Lake City psychologist and attorney who worked on the
Drummond
 case.

Stephen Drummond's parents filed the lawsuit on his behalf in 1998. It
contended Dudley used drugs and hypnotic suggestions to train an army of
killers from the ranks of his patients.

The suit sought damages, contending Stephen Drummond never will be able to
work or live on his own because of Dudley's negligence.

Attorneys representing Dudley said Stephen Drummond's decline was a normal
part of his autism and had nothing to do with Dudley's treatment.

Jurors heard evidence for about four weeks and deliberated almost two days.

Juror Joan Lane of Tacoma said it was a difficult decision, partly because
it
is hard to put a price on Stephen Drummond's losses.

"We agreed that some of what (Dudley) did was harmful," Lane said. "But we
also agreed it was something (Stephen Drummond) was born with."

Dudley treated Stephen Drummond for a seizure disorder from 1989 to 1992. He
saw his patient eight times in 1989, 13 times in 1990, once in 1991 and six
 times in 1992.

The Drummonds' attorneys said the drugs Dudley prescribed made his patient
psychotic and delusional - symptoms not usually associated with autism.

During a therapy fishing trip in October 1990, Dudley injected Stephen
Drummond with sodium amytal, a powerful sedative, the attorneys say.
Dudley's
files said he intended to erase part of his brain and implant a new one.

By February 1992, Stephen Drummond sat in his room all day, talking to
himself, his attorneys say. He didn't drive nor bathe and needed constant
 care.

Worried about her son's care under Dudley, Jeanie Drummond confronted Dudley
in November 1992. He told her he was going to take over hospitals, police
forces and schools, and that she was fortunate he wanted her son to be one
of
his trained soldiers, his attorneys say.

That prompted the Drummonds to end their son's treatment with Dudley.

Meanwhile, Dudley's license to practice was suspended in 1993 after he was
diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In addition, Bellevue police found him with
an arsenal of guns in a hotel room where he was treating a suicidal
 15-year-old boy.
