Women barred from Prophet’s chamber
15/11/2002

JEDDAH, 15 November 2002 — Women have temporarily been banned to enter, approach or pray at the Prophet’s chamber and the rawdah (the area between the Prophet’s chamber and his mimber) at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday.

The General Presidency of Prophet’s Mosque Affairs was forced to take the unprecedented move by the inconveniences caused by the huge crowd, according to an official source at the presidency.

Female visitors and pilgrims will be allowed to pass by the place called Aghas’ Bench (Aghas were the servants of the mosque) and then to go out through the Jibril gate and encircling once again to enter by the women’s gate and return to where they entered the mosque, according to Al-Madinah daily.

Several visitors to the mosque, which is the second most important pilgrim center in the world, particularly those coming from distant countries for the first and possibly the last time in their life, have been upset by the ban. They come to Madinah with the hope of fulfilling their cherished dream of greeting the Prophet (peace be upon him), and his two companions, Abu Bakr and Omar (may Allah be pleased with them). Visitors are especially keen to pray at the rawdah because the Prophet stated, “the place between my mimber (pulpit) and my chamber is a rawdah (garden) among the gardens of paradise and my mimber is on a stream among the streams of paradise.”

Commenting on the ban, the official source said that the authorities were prompted to ban women from coming to this part of the mosque by the huge crowds which made it impossible for old and weak women to move freely to the rawdah and back which in turn delayed the removal of the partitions before the adhan (prayer calls) of Dhuhr and Asr were made. However, the ban will be lifted after the months of Ramadan and Haj.

The presidency has also posted some officials to fix the thick canvas partitions to demarcate the women’s place for prayer and limit visit in the two sessions after the sunrise to one hour before the Dhuhr prayer and after the Dhuhr prayer till one hour before the Asr prayer, the newspaper reported.
