New York Post-June 9, 2000 ANOTHER GHOST FOR GORE Is Al Gore looking nervously over his shoulder? He should be - because the lingering campaign-finance scandal from his 1996 re-election effort is catching up with him, even if the mainstream media have lost interest. Two bombshell revelations this week underscore the need to keep this issue alive, despite hysterically disingenuous cries of "partisanship" by congressional Democrats. First, the House Committee on Government Reform released a memo - kept secret for nearly three years - by FBI Director Louis Freeh warning that Janet Reno's Justice Department was turning a deliberately blind eye to Gore's involvement in fund-raising illegalities. According to Freeh - a Clinton-Gore appointee - Reno was ignoring "reliable" and "compelling" evidence of Gore's active involvement in illegal fund-raising. That evidence, he noted, conflicted with Gore's own testimony - and suggested that Reno was wrongly accepting Gore's version at face value. "In the face of compelling evidence that the vice president was a very active, sophisticated fund-raiser who knew exactly what he was doing, his own exculpatory statements must not be given undue weight," Freeh warned. He also called for a total overhaul of Reno's fund-raising investigation - switching the targets from low-level bit players to the very top of the administration: President Clinton and a "core group of aides." That's because, Freeh noted, "most of the alleged campaign abuses flowed directly or indirectly from the all-out efforts by the White House and Democratic National Committee to raise money." Freeh's advice was ignored. That's understandable - two top FBI officials have testified to Congress that the head of Reno's public integrity section, Lee Radek, told them he was under pressure to save the attorney general's job by not appointing an independent counsel to investigate the fund-raising scandal. In fact, when Freeh learned of Radek's remarks, he wrote Reno that they "would be enough for me to take him and the Criminal Division off the case completely." Once again, his warning was ignored. Now the same House committee has disclosed that every single e-mail originating in Gore's office from March 1998 to April 1999 has disappeared - despite federal law requiring them to be archived. Gore's office blames a mysterious "technical configuration error." That might seem reasonable - had it not followed an earlier disclosure that the White House refused to turn over thousands of subpoenaed e-mails dealing with everything from Monica Lewinsky to Filegate. And that officials at Northrop Grumman, which administered the White House computers, said they'd been threatened with "jail" if they told anyone about the e-mails, which had been redefined as "classified" documents. The coverup now underway by this administration rivals anything seen during the Watergate era. Except that this time the national media have lost interest - and no agency in Washington can be trusted to investigate it. So it falls to George W. Bush and the GOP to start holding the veep's feet to the fire. There are important questions that need answers. ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> *Mike Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends Shalom, A Salaam Aleikum, and to all, A Good Day. ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
