-Caveat Lector- http://www.newsday.com/ap/text/international/ap18.htm Ex-US Researcher Sentenced in China BEIJING (AP) -- A former Chinese military official who fled to the United States but was jailed on returning home three years ago has been convicted in a retrial of leaking state secrets and sentenced to 10 years in prison, a relative said Saturday. Hua Di, who co-authored a series of influential writings on China's nuclear and missile programs while at Stanford University in the 1990s, has appealed and a decision is expected soon, said the relative, who asked not to be identified by name. An official in the military's rocketry program, Hua fled to the United States in 1989 after he criticized the government's violent suppression of democracy protests centered on Tiananmen Square. He made his first trip home in 1998 after, his family said, he received assurances about his safety. Within days he was arrested, accused of leaking vital military secrets. Hua's relatives have not been allowed to see him. Their only contact is through his lawyer, and even he has no reliable information on Hua's health. The arrest interrupted chemotherapy treatment for a form of male breast cancer. ''Outwardly he's fat and pale. He hasn't seen the sun in three years,'' said the relative, citing the lawyer's description. ''But cancer is on the inside. We don't know.'' Hua, now 64, was tried in secret in March, convicted and sentenced to 15 years. But in a rare move for China's normally pliant judicial system, especially in a sensitive political case, the Beijing Higher People's Court ordered a retrial, citing inadequate evidence. The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court tried the case again Nov. 23, finding Hua guilty and sentencing him to 10 years in prison, the relative said. Prosecutors in particular have focused on a 1992 article that contained information on a Chinese medium-range missile, the DF-21. Hua's co-author on that and most other articles, Stanford University professor John Lewis, has said they used public documents and that Chinese military officials cooperated. Stanford and the U.S. government have quietly lobbied for Hua's release. Even if his appeal of his retrial fails, the Chinese government could still release on Hua on medical parole. ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
