-Caveat Lector- =========================== The Committee for National Solidarity Tolstojeva 34, 11000 Belgrade, YU Belgrade, 22 October 1999 Dear friends, For several months now (ever since this years' Vidovdan, when he had disappeared on his way to Prizren, in a noble attempt to protect the many years' work on preserving the memorial of King Milutin - the Church of Bogorodica Ljeviska, at the time when Prizren was in flames) the Miric family has been searching for their husband and father Mladen, a prominent Serbian painter and historian of art. They have visited every possible relevant institution, tried everything they could, but they haven't been able to learn anything about Mladen's fate, let alone make contact with him. They have heard all kinds of stories, one more terrifying than the other, about what happens to the abducted Serbs in Kosovo. Through some private channels they have learned that he might be alive in a prison held by Albanians in the vicinity of Prizren. It is with this knowledge that his children go to bed every night. It is with this same kind of knowledge that many other children from Kosovo go to bed at night. We have already written about Bojana Lazic, Zorica Miladinovic, Svetlana Marinkovic... There are many such cases, but if we keep silent about them, we shall not be able to help anyone, let alone our unprotected population in Kosovo that is still struggling to survive. Help us so that tomorrow we could save some other unfortunate person by sending out a joint appeal. Translate this letter into languages you speak and send it to all those you believe are committed to and are working on the respect of human rights for all those who are suffering. Letter of Appeal by Mladen's Wife Slavica My husband Mladen Miric, painter and a historian of art, has been abducted by Albanian gangs on 29 June 1999 somewhere in or around Pristina. Working in his field, the art of painting, he has left behind a great number of paintings, graphics and other works of art which are now disappeared, most probably stolen, and the house where we used to live in burned to the ground. Apart from painting, he was also involved in preserving the monuments of cultural heritage. He has left several thousand slides with pictures of Orthodox churches and monasteries in Prizren and its vicinity, Slava cakes, colourfully painted Easter eggs and plenty of such material. Wishing to salvage all this from the flames of war, he tried to cross over from Grachanica to Prizren with Bishop Artemije. Somewhere on the road between Pristina and Grachanica he disappeared without a trace. The only identification document he had on his person was a membership card of the Association of Painters of Serbia (ULUS). This fact speaks loud enough about his true devotion to his profession - the arts. KFOR has been notified about his disappearance, as well as the Center for Peace and Tolerance, General Michael Jackson has been personally informed, together with many government and non-governmental agencies. There was no answer whatsoever. Everybody simply says, "wait". I ask myself - until when? How can one stand the uncertainty, for almost four months now? How does one answer the children's question: "Where is daddy; when are the Albanians going to release him from prison?" How can children of 10 and 13 understand all this human cruelty? How can they grow up when they carry in their souls a huge void, not knowing where their father is? They have no home of their own, no toys of their own, no favourite photographs of their own, they have neither their home town nor their childhood, so brutally interrupted. Are we in the name of our children going to keep silent about the atrocities that occur or are we going to speak about them out loud so that nothing of the kind will happen ever again?
