}}}>Begin Rhodes List Includes 32 Americans Sunday December 9, 2001 7:50 AM WASHINGTON (AP) - Thirty-two American college students have been selected as Rhodes Scholars, the scholarship trust announced Sunday. The winners were selected by eight regional committees from among 925 applicants who were endorsed by 319 colleges and universities throughout the nation. Rhodes Scholarships, created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes, provide two or three years of study at Oxford University in England. Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor, among other attributes. Among the winners was Kendra M. Young of Bigfork, Mont. Young is a senior at Grinnell College where she majors in biology. She has won research awards and grants for her work in biology and has worked as a paramedic in Bolivia and in a hospital in Costa Rica. She plays the violin and trombone and enjoys high-altitude hiking. Harvard University placed five students, the most of any institution, on this year's list of winners. Harvard has 300 winners over the years, the most of any U.S. institution.
