Subject: Access Waco- When Feds Overshoot
Date: Saturday, February 05, 2000 11:30 PM

Hello everyone!

Well, it's an honor to be taking over this list for Janice. I wish her much
luck and happiness always. She has been an excellent source for breaking
Waco news, and I have appreciated all her efforts! She's a dear friend and a
special lady :) There hasn't been any hard hitting news about the
investigations or upcoming trials today, so here is an excellent commentary
piece from John Young. Enjoy :)

Young: When feds overshoot

JOHN YOUNG Opinion page editor

These days you can get an anti-government mob going with a point and a click.
So it's good to see news stories on apparent government flub-ups that reserve
judgment.

Saturday's Trib was reserved.

A Coryell County ranch had several 155 mm howitzer shells rain on it. The
shells, we reported, were "believed to be fired from Fort Hood."

A reporter's job is not to make spot indictments. But someone otherwise
inclined might blurt: Where else do you get 155 mm shells? The Quik-Pak?

Maybe there was a time when we could have tried to blame something like this
on Russians, or Cuban nationalists, or Oklahoma.

Doing forensics tests of these shells would be like autopsying the guy who
catches a falling baby-grand piano on his head. We know what happened. The
real question is: why?

A few miles north and east, a judge, many attorneys and lots of federal
officials are still trying to come up with a cogent explanation for what
people around the world saw with their own eyes: the horrible deaths of 76
people at the Branch Davidian compound, 57 days after a shoot-out in which 10
people died.

----Waiting on evidence----

Those of us who are not prone to spot indictments feel a little like we're
driving a motorized shopping cart at the Indy 500. By now we've been lapped
about 480 times by the racers who say they know exactly what happened.

It's almost seven years now and we still don't know who started the Feb. 28
shoot-out, or whether any forensics evidence can back up claims that federal
agents fired into the compound the day of the April 19 siege and fire.

We shouldn't need infrared film to tell us if FBI agents fired at the
Davidians during the siege. We should know from what bullets were found in
the Davidians who didn't die by fire. The medical examiner who first got to
look at the bodies said recently he'd like a chance to examine the forensics
evidence to address those very questions.

This is unnerving, because by satellite relay we all considered ourselves
eyewitnesses. Yes, we have a whole nation of experts about the Branch
Davidian tragedy, and over the last seven years we've demonstrated the line
between expertise and ignorance can be fine.

This playing field has given conspiracists much room to roam, has given
sickos like Timothy McVeigh reasons to keep their camo pressed.

"Revelations" seem to come frequently, but they don't tell us much. The
revelation that incendiary tear-gas shells, "grenades" in some people's
phrasing, had been used in the siege sounded explosive, except that nothing
revealed thus far would indicate that the grenades in question had anything
to do with the fire.

----A big bang----

In truth, the most compelling report about grenades had nothing to do with
the fire but had to do with the question, "Who fired first Feb. 28?"

Treasury agents' diversionary use of a so-called flash-bang grenade easily
could have been perceived by hair-trigger gunmen inside as the first "shot"
of the opening shoot-out.

Regardless, the raid had been catastrophically compromised. Cover blown, the
ATF exposed a lot of people, including its own, to lethal force.

The resulting standoff had every criteria of a hostage situation. A country
that could wait a year or more to get hostages out alive from foreign lands
in this case couldn't wait to free hostages in its back yard. After 51 days
it forced the issue, and fire settled it.

We saw that happen, just like you can see the shells that hit the ranch in
Coryell County. We know what happened, at least that which we saw. We still
don't know why.
