Amnesty International alleges U.S. has secret prisons Jun 6, 2005, 1:22 GMT printer friendly email this article WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- The United States is maintaining a series of prisons worldwide, many of them secret, in which people disappear, alleges Amnesty International. "In some cases at least we know that they`re being mistreated, abused, tortured and even killed," William Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said on "Fox News Sunday." The detainees are held indefinitely, are incommunicado without access to lawyers or a judicial system, or to their families, according to Schulz. "In some cases at least we know that they`re being mistreated, abused, tortured and even killed and those are similar at least in character, if not in size, to what happened in the gulag and many other prison systems in world history." However, Schultz said there`s no question that in size and in duration, there is no comparison with the U.S. detention facilities and the 1.6 million deaths over a 30-year period in the gulags of the former Soviet Union.
