-Caveat Lector- Anti-NATO Demonstrators Arrested Thursday, June 3, 1999; 4:14 p.m. EDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than two-dozen religious demonstrators were arrested in front of the White House on Thursday after demanding that President Clinton and NATO halt the bombing of Yugoslavia. The arrests of members of the National Coalition for Peace in Yugoslavia came moments after the Serb lawmakers in Belgrade approved a peace deal to resolve the crisis and let more than 850,000 ethnic Albanians return to Kosovo, a province of Serbia, Yugoslavia's dominant state. Clinton said Yugoslavia's willingness to accept international peace terms for Kosovo was encouraging and welcome but said there must be ``real results'' before NATO bombing ends. The 100 to 150 protesters were not satisfied. ``We are not here to demand the president's cautious optimism,'' said Gordon Clark, executive director of Peace Action, one of seven groups that make up the coalition. Chanting, ``Stop the bombing, stop the killing, stop the suffering now,'' the demonstrators left Lafayette Park and crossed Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House's Northwest Gate. There, Clark and 25 other protesters knelt in the driveway and sang hymns. U.S. Park Police revoked their permit to protest because it required them to avoid blocking traffic, according to U.S. Park Police Sgt. Robert MacLean. The officers handcuffed the 26 demonstrators and loaded them into two police vans, MacLean said.
