WJPBR Email News List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War! Az Guard may be on border within 3 weeks Citizen Staff Report Feb. 18, 2002 Governor Jane Hull's office is expecting the federal government to activate Arizona's National Guard to police the U.S.-Mexico border within three weeks. U.S. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge said the Justice Department, which oversees the Immigration and Naturalization Service, signed off on an agreement last week. Hull spokeswoman Francie Noyes said today that direction from Washington, D.C., about the deployment of troops is "imminent." "We have been waiting for that to happen for about a month," she said. Hull activated 60 Arizona National Guard members in November to assist border inspectors and reduce traffic delays at the border. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, bottlenecks at Arizona ports of entry hurt businesses on both sides of the border. Nationwide, the president plans to activate more than 1,500 troops, who could help with security at ports of entry, intelligence operations and cargo or vehicle inspections, among other tasks. It was unclear how many troops would come from Arizona or where they would be assigned, Noyes said. Ridge's office could not be reached for comment today. The deployment of the military on the border has been a controversial sticking point for politicians and immigrant activists. *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U. S. C.
