Beijing's war on Christ

A handful of internal Chinese government documents, just published by a U.S.
religious-rights organization, reveal that Beijing's zeal to crush
"unauthorized" Christianity is far from waning.

Working in tandem with sympathetic officials, Chinese Christians were able to
smuggle the documents – which appear legitimate – out of the country,
according to a Wednesday report by the Washington Post's Philip P. Pan.

"I've never seen anything like it in such quantity," said Robin Munro, China
specialist at the London School of Oriental and African Studies. "These
documents are from all around the country, all consistent, all quite
draconian, and all expressing implacable hostility toward these groups and
determination to eradicate them."

In China, any religious group which operates without Beijing's stamp of
approval is verboten, and adherents are vigorously pursued and punished.

Describing non-state-sanctioned religious groups as "hostile," Sun Jianxin,
vice director of public security in Anhui province, warned in one of the
documents that they "have hastened their infiltration through various
methods, such as via foundations or academic delegations, and all kinds of
media."

And don't think he's worried just about Wednesday night prayer meetings. Sun
sees something far worse: "Hostile Western powers headed by the U.S. have
hastened to carry on their strategies of Westernizing, splitting and
weakening our country." (If only evangelicals really had that kind of
influence.)

Even while Beijing and the Vatican discussed better relations concerning
China's Catholics, who are obligated to follow the state and not Rome, Sun
declared that his security forces "began to search, educate, convert,
reconnoiter and control some key members of the underground Catholics."

Indeed, as Ananova.com reports, Vatican news agency Fides has just released
the identities of "33 bishops and priests either detained or being kept under
strict police surveillance and forbidden to worship. It said about 20 more
priests, whose names are not known, are also being detained."

Documents also reveal an attempt to infiltrate "illegal" Protestant groups
and squash the Falun Gong sect.

As panda huggers wax eloquent about the mercy of Beijing, which did recently
release a Hong Kong businessman jailed for smuggling Bibles, one can hardly
escape the conclusion that China, on the eve of President Bush's visit, is
only attempting to curry favor by such a move. Bush showed special concern
for the Bible runner.

But don't buy it – the release of one Bible smuggler will not counterbalance
Beijing's overall goal.

Said one security minister quoted in the smuggled papers, "We need to work
more, talk less to smash the cult quietly."

The current regime in China will not ease up until it has eradicated any form
of independent Christian worship. All believers who have not bowed the knee
to the Baal of Beijing will be punished.
