Body That May Belong to Mexican Drug Lord Cremated Sun Feb 24,11:48 PM ET MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - In an embarrassing development for Mexican authorities, it emerged on Sunday that a corpse that could be that of Mexican drug lord Ramon Arellano Felix, one of the FBI (news - web sites)'s 10 most wanted men, has been cremated. The Attorney General's Office said on Friday it was investigating whether the body of a man killed in a shootout earlier this month in the Pacific coast resort of Mazatlan was that of the head of the powerful Tijuana drug cartel. The body carried identification naming him as Jorge Perez Lopez and was handed over to people claiming to be his relatives after DNA tests were taken. "The pseudo family members to whom the corpse believed to be that of Ramon Arellano Felix was handed -- and which we now know to have been incinerated -- are being investigated," the Attorney General's Office said in a statement on Sunday night. "However there are other elements like blood, facial photographs, finger prints and others with which we are working to determine whether or not it is the drug trafficker," the statement said. Arellano Felix's picture appears next to Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s on the FBI's 10 most wanted list (news - web sites). Arellano Felix, 37, and his brother Benjamin head the violent Tijuana cartel on the U.S. border. The cartel is believed to be responsible for the murder of dozens of rivals, police and officials in its battle to control the lucrative cocaine and marijuana trade on the border.
