CONDIT IS HEADED FOR GRAND-JURY HOT SEAT By NILES LATHEM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- February 26, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Embattled Rep. Gary Condit is expected to be summoned soon to testify before a federal grand jury investigating the disappearance of Chandra Levy, law-enforcement officials said last night. Sources told The Post that Condit, whose clumsy efforts to cover up his affair with the missing D.C. intern put him in heaps of legal and political trouble, is likely to be called to testify sometime this spring, along with other members of his staff. Law-enforcement officials were careful to say the California Democrat is not a target of the investigation of what is still being officially described as a missing persons case. They noted Levy's former co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and residents of her downtown apartment building and health club will also be directed to testify. But sources said United Air Lines flight attendant Anne Marie Smith, who claimed Condit urged her to sign a false affidavit denying she had an affair with him, is also likely to be on the grand jury's witness list, indicating possible obstruction of justice charges against Condit are still being pursued by the Justice Department. Condit's new lawyer, California celebrity mouthpiece Mark Geragos, could not be reached for comment, but has said in the past that any idea that his controversial client is a target of the grand jury probe is "false." Police officials say they have no new leads in finding out what happened to Levy, who disappeared from her apartment last May 1. But news of the grand jury's interest in Condit's testimony is the latest blow to the besieged lawmaker, who is running for re-election but way down in the polls, out of campaign cash, and has been abandoned by party luminaries in advance of a March 5 primary. In addition to his political problems, Condit is also said to have sold his infamous condo in the Adams Morgan section of Washington, the site of his much publicized trysts with Levy and other women, because of his mounting financial problems.
