The Confederate States Constitution
The Confederate Constitution is undergoing a renaissance. In fact, some
scholars, including constitutional historian Marshall DeRosa, even consider it
a improvement in several respects over its predecessor and principal source of
inspiration, the the U.S. Constitution of 1787. In honor of the Confederate
Constitution, we're pleased to present what is presumably the first C.S.
Constitution page, replete with a comprehensive FAQ. This is far from a
complete page, but over the next few months we hope to add other resources,
including essays and speeches by Confederate-era statesmen discussing the
merits of the C.S. Constitution.
Confederate Constitution: An Overview
Who and what inspired the Confederate Constitution. How many Confederate
Constitutions were there? Who had a hand in drafting the document. Was the
Confederate Constitution virtually a carbon copy of the U.S. Constitution or
were there some significant changes? Read this FAQ and find out for yourself.
If you don't have time to read the FAQ, check out this short essay on the
Confederate Constitution.

To understand the Confederate Constitution, one should have a firm grasp of
states rights theory. So, if your understanding of states rights is a little
rusty, read our States Rights FAQ.

We've also added complete texts of the Provisional and Permanent Confederate
Constitutions as well as the first clause-by-clause comparison of the U.S. and
C.S. Constitutions available on-line.

What They Said About The C.S. Constitution
Like their 18th century predecessors, the men who drafted the Confederate
Constitution were understandably proud of their work. Decades after the War
Between the States, Alabama statesman and educator Jabez Curry argued in
Chapter III of his Civil History of the Confederate Government that the
Confederate States Constitution of 1861 was a vast improvement over its
predecessor, the U.S. Constitution of 1787. He was not alone. Writing in A
Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States, former Confederate Vice
President Alexander Stephens described the Permanent Constitution as "a
monument of the wisdom, forecast and statesmanship of the men who constituted
it." In a famous speech delivered only a few days after the Confederate
Constitution was drafted, Alabama delegate Robert Hardy Smith also expressed
similar sentiments.
