In the Hartford-based First District of Connecticut the likely Republican candidate is former World Wrestling Federation champion Bob Backlund. His resume notes that he wrestled and never lost to Hulk Hogan and Jesse the Body Ventura. That district will need to have a lot of wrestling fans for Backlund to prevail: It's very Democratic. The current occupant is freshman Democrat John Larson. In the 1st District of Texas (the northeast corner of the state, including Texarkana), the GOP has recruited Noble Willingham, the actor who plays C.D. Parker on television's "Walker, Texas Ranger." More to the point, since he's running for the House, is that he also does comedy: he's had roles in "Home Improvement" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" (which spawned former Georgia congressman Ben Jones) and the movie "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." The incumbent is Democrat Max Sandlin. Perhaps the most bizarre is Independent candidate Ben Thompson, running in Minnesota's 2d District, the southwest part of the state. In the early 1980s he served four years in prison for sexually assulting two teenaged girls. He says he's not the person he was then. Well, that's goodnews for House pages. Democrat David Minge holds the seat today. ~Tiresias CapitolWatch Insider provides news from the inner workings of our nation's capital, including upcoming legislation, what's happening behind the scenes, and how the actions of Congress really affect you.
