Apparently, a Key West Chamber of Commerce seminar on doing business with Cuba had scheduled Vicki Huddleston, of all people, as the keynote speaker. She's backed out (the wonder is she ever planned to be there at all) -- claiming scheduling problems based on her appearance last week in Miami with Bush (which should have made it easier for her to be in Key West on Tuesday). The Bush appearance in Miami is now being blamed on Jimmy Carter. The session, which was planned for Tuesday, was to be hosted by the Key West Chamber of Commerce and Florida Atlantic University. The scheduled keynote speaker was Vicki Huddleston, who represents the U.S. State Department in Havana. But this week, she canceled her engagement at the Casa Marina. "Because [Huddleston] was in Miami with the president this week, she had to cancel," said Alex Sokolloff, a coordinator of the event from FAU. He said Huddleston had to fly back to Havana after accompanying Bush in Miami. The president was in South Florida last week to recognize the centennial of Cuban independence from Spain and reiterate the administration's support of the 43-year-old U.S. embargo on Cuba. "Her schedule was turned upside down because of what was going on between Bush and Carter," Sokolloff said. He was referring to a visit to the island nation by former President Carter, who called for an end to the trade embargo. That apparently sparked Bush's trip to Miami to address Cuban exiles, and state that no such end was coming in the near future. Chamber officials organized the workshop to explore potential business opportunities in Cuba. Huddleston has represented the U.S. in Cuba since 1999. Sokolloff said he hopes to reschedule the event. However, Huddleston may not be the keynote speaker, as her term in Havana expires in September. He said chamber staff has contacted everyone that had reserved a seat at the seminar. However, anyone with questions should contact the chamber at 294-2587.
