This is the earlier gas attack (13/9) I mentioned in a previous post).

Fumes Leak at Sydney Airport

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - On a day when there was another rush of Olympic travelers,
noxious fumes that appeared to come from a cleaning solvent escaped into part of
Sydney's international airport.

Dozens of people were treated for stinging eyes and difficulty breathing Wednesday in
a section of the airport that was quickly sealed off.

Ambulance, police and fire crews were called to the departure terminal in response to
reports of a ``major gas leak,'' said Andrew Hall, a spokesman for the New South Wales
state Ambulance Service.

Authorities said 27 people were taken to a hospital and 40 more treated at the scene,
authorities said.

``Most have been treated with oxygen and saline in their eyes to ease the
irritation,'' said Caroline Hancock, an ambulance spokeswoman.

An initial investigation indicated the fumes were caused by a cleaning solvent that
spilled into the airport's air conditioning system, said ambulance spokesman Ian
Krimmer.

``It was a routine substance used in routine cleaning of air conditioning,'' he said.
``There has been a minor spillage causing a vapor which has caused discomfort to some
people.''

The fumes did not disrupt any flights or airport services, and no Olympic passengers
were affected, said Sydney airport spokesman Peter Gibbs.

``Olympic passengers in the inbound passenger area were completely unaffected,'' Gibbs
said.

However, the immigration area and surrounding duty-free shops on the outbound side of
Australian customs were closed for about two hours.

Sydney airport is handling the heaviest workload in its history as tourists, athletes
and Olympic officials stream in for the games, which begin Friday.

Greg Russell, director of aviation for Sydney Airport Corp., said the airport's air
conditioning system had been shut down and fans were turned on to clear the air.

When the fumes were first noticed, an announcement in the terminal told passengers to
stay in the departure lounge until further notice.

That restriction was lifted soon after, and passengers were diverted around the
affected area to their flights.

Airport spill puts 27 in Sydney hospitals

By JANE WARDELL and DAVID KILLICK
Thursday 14 September 2000

Parts of Sydney's international airport were evacuated yesterday after a chemical
spill that put 27 people in hospital.

Poisonous fumes spread through the immigration section in the departures area after
maintenance workers accidentally spilt cleaning solvents into the air-conditioning
system about 10am, emergency services said. A fire brigade hazardous materials team
searched for the source of the fumes.

The emergency came as the airport handled one of its heaviest workloads, with
tourists, athletes and Olympic officials streaming into Sydney for the Games.

Police said 40 people complained of nausea and breathing difficulties and were
assessed by ambulance officers.

Twenty-seven people were taken to hospital for observation, a spokeswoman said.

All were reported to be in a stable condition by early afternoon.

The immigration area and nearby duty-free shops were evacuated and closed for almost
two hours. New South Wales fire brigades spokesman Ian Krimmer said it appeared the
problem had been caused by cleaning solvent that had spilt into the air-conditioning,
It was not a gas leak as first thought.

"We have been taking some air sampling and at this stage we believe there has been a
minor spillage of possibly a cleaning agent in the air-conditioning ducting," Mr
Krimmer said.

Sydney Airports Corporation aviation director Greg Russell said emergency crews were
called after a number of people in the departures area reported feeling ill.

"The air-conditioning system was shut down, we are now operating an extraction system
and will continue to do so throughout the day," he said.

Mr Russell said the fumes had been confined to a small area.

"Alternative arrangements were made to clear outbound passengers, airlines were
advised and at this point in time we believe there were no delays," he said.
