-Caveat Lector- My computer is on a cable modem and I recently took the risk of checking my computer security using the free SHIELDSUP! at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 I had an open portal (NetBios) which they said was a pretty bad security risk. So I followed their advice to correct "Network Bondage" problems: http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm NetBios' portal was then tested as closed. My other portals read as closed but not "stealth." So I took another risk in installing the latest free version of Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/default.htm Now everything reads "stealth" - in fact I am now told that my computer is invisible to others. That's good. So Zone Alarm tells me whenever there is an attempted intrusion packet being sent to my computer. I'm pretty freaked out by the places that are attempting to intrude into my little PC world. The last two of the three listed I was able to confirm hold government contracts. I'm not taking this personally because I understand that there are programs out there designed to scan for open ports. I don't yet have reason to believe that my IP address is targeted specifically. The free Zone Alarm firewall has been mentioned on this list 3 times before, the last as recently as September of this year. I am only adding my own personal experience as emphasis. I cannot guarantee that SHIELDSUP! or Zone Alarm are safe - I took a risk in using them. I'm glad I did.
