of coffee before starting his overnight police shift.
What he got was a blow to the head with a pellet gun as he foiled an attempted robbery at a South Side Dunkin' Donuts on Sunday night. McGowan said he was in line behind three men at the store, 10401 S. Western Ave., at 10:40 p.m. Sunday, when one of the three men asked the counter attendant for a drink. With the server's back turned, the man pulled what looked like a handgun from his waistband. "He slid it up onto the counter and asked the clerk to `Give it up.'" McGowan said. Identifying himself as a Chicago police officer, the eight-year veteran tried to wrestle the suspect to the ground when one of the other suspects hit him on the head with a gun. Both guns turned out to be pellet guns, but police did recover a shotgun a block from the scene. Stunned by the blow, McGowan, 40, fell to the floor and the assailants fled the doughnut shop. An off-duty detective saw the suspects running and followed them, catching the license plate number. The three men were in custody within 45 minutes, McGowan said. According to Chicago Police Sgt. Ray Madigan, Antoine Clark, 19, of the 7800 block of South Merrill Avenue, Chicago, has been charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and attempted armed robbery. Delaurence Robinson, 18, of the 7900 block of South Constance Avenue, Chicago; and Lathan Monegan, 21, of the 1300 block of Buffalo Avenue in Calumet City, were both charged with attempted armed robbery. McGowan said he just reacted to the situation at the shop. "The only thing that went through my mind was to grab him and get the gun away from me and the clerk," McGowan said. "You really can't think about anything. It just kind of happened." After being treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park for the blow, McGowan said he returned to work, finishing his shift around noon Monday. A manager at the Dunkin' Donuts said he couldn't understand why someone would try to rob the shop because police officers often come in for coffee at night. -----------------------------------------------
