She had to be silenced before the war was to begin. It also had to be done with enough time in-between the murder and the war so that the connection would not become obvious, therefore she was the first phase of the operation. The timing was right, the conspiracy critics would logically assume it was because of the marriage thing. It would have to take a real analytical genius to figure it out, perhaps even one with psychic abilities.
