-Caveat Lector- <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"> </A> -Cui Bono?- >From NEWSMAX.COM (e-mailable) {{<Begin>}} NewsMax.com Advertise Your Banner Here A Lazy Bush? & Veep Picking II John LeBoutillier Thursday March 16, 2000 Before continuing to explore possible vice presidential picks, a quick – but critically important – note: Tuesday night Fox News Channel’s Carl Cameron reporting from Austin, Texas, broke a flabbergasting story: he said he’s learned that Bush intended to take "most of the summer off from the campaign trail.” I practically levitated out of my chair! Take "most of the summer off”! How can this be? Al Gore is so hungry to win he will go door-to-door all day and night in every community in the country every single day from now to November if he has to. He is hungry. If Bush wants to win, he is going to have to be even hungrier! Time off? Sure – next November 8th – the day after the election. Until then, W better understand one thing: Al Gore is a political animal who will do and say anything to win. Bush, if he really wants the presidency, is going to have to outwork, out-argue and outfight Al Gore. Is Bush up to it? Now, a few more Veep names: 1) Ohio Congressman John Kasich: retiring from the House after an early withdrawal from the presidential race, this energetic young man has presided over the House Budget Committee while the federal budget was finally – after thirty years! – balanced. However, Representatives are rarely chosen for Veep because they only represent a district – not even an entire state. The question is: what would Kasich bring to the GOP ticket? Would Bush almost definitely win Ohio if Kasich were on the ticket? Would Bush have a better chance of winning Ohio if Senator George Voinovich were on the ticket instead? The guess here is that if Bush picks an Ohioan, he’ll go with Voinovich. Look for Kasich to be in Bush’s cabinet as director of OMB. 2) Alan Keyes: the hands-down winner of all the GOP debates, this magnetic figure would energize the Right. The problem is Bush should already have those voters. He now needs to reach out to others. Keyes doesn’t even bring his home state – Maryland – nor does his presence on the ticket change the likelihood that 90 percent of African Americans will continue to vote Democrat. If not Veep, Keyes would be a wonderful Secretary of State or UN Ambassador. Can’t you just see him teeing off on those crooked and amoral foreign leaders who rip off our foreign aid? 3) Representative J.C. Watts is another excellent young leader in the House. But, like Kasich, he can’t necessarily bring even his home state – Oklahoma – to the GOP. The GOP is going to win it anyway – whether or not Watts or Governor Keating is on the ticket. Keating is attractive and ambitious. But he comes from Texas’ neighboring state; what does he bring to the ticket? 4) Senator Rick Santorum is a young first-termer running this year for reelection in Pennsylvania. If he goes on the ticket, he has to drop out of the Senate race. The GOP may then lose that vital seat. We need to keep him there – and to keep the Senate in Republican control. P.S. I now hear that Bush is going to take a long weekend off this weekend. How much do you want to bet we’ll be seeing Al Gore all weekend long making news and getting attention – all with the aim of recruiting those vital independent voters?
