Not One, But Two CME's Heading Our Way...08/11/00 by Mitch Battros (ECTV) NASA has just disclosed the two CME's have occurred which appear to have happened right after the other. Here is a photo: http://www.spaceweather.com/images/10aug00/cme_c3_med.gif SOHO detected a full-halo coronal mass ejection on August 9th, coronagraphs on the spacecraft recorded a second, partial-halo eruption at on August 10th. The most recent CME was relatively slow-moving. The eruption may have been associated with activity observed by SOHO's extreme ultraviolet telescope near the center of the Sun's disk around sunspot group 9115. These disturbances could trigger geomagnetic activity beginning in two to three days when the leading edge of the August 9th eruption reaches Earth. http://www.spaceweather.com/ Equation: Sunspots = Solar Flares = Magnetic Shift = Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents = Extreme Weather As mentioned in my last article, NASA has now also disclosed there have been what I would describe as an unusually large number of comets hitting the Sun. Here again is NASA's statement: "the LASCO comet count is now (unofficially, 10 July 2000) up to 176, only 5 months after the 100th comet was identified! The official (confirmed) count is now 146. An amateur astronomer, Michael Oates, now has 31 confirmed comets credited to him, compared to SOHO team member Doug Biesecker's 47." I have become open to the idea this increase in comet activity may very well have an impact on an already active solar cycle. Of course, the other and perhaps first question to answer would be "why are there more comets flying around"? Has something occurred we do not know about? I have not been able to find supporting data that would suggest a collision of some kind has in fact occurred. Until then, I will watch carefully.
