ITAR-TASS separately reported the blast was caused by an explosive device. The blast ripped through an underpass in the city's central Pushkin Square. An ORT television journalist at the scene reported by telephone that massive plumes of smoke were pouring out onto the street from the underpass. She said dozens of people, their faces blackened and covered in blood, were streaming out of the underground passage in panic.
