FDA Updates Info on Radiation Damage Prevention WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) - The US Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) (FDA) issued on Monday new guidelines on the use of potassium iodide to prevent radiation damage to the thyroid gland. The guidelines, entitled ``Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies,'' were issued to update recommendations published nearly 20 years ago, the agency noted. The FDA said the new guidance recommends lower exposure thresholds for prevention as well as lower doses for newborns, infants and children. The agency said its basic position that potassium iodide is safe and effective for preventing the uptake of radioiodine by the thyroid gland remains unchanged. The new recommendations, based in part on data gathered after the Chernobyl reactor accident in Russia, are basically in line with the World Health Organization (news - web sites)'s guidelines for prevention, or prophylaxis, in the event of a nuclear accident, the agency noted. The updated guidance comes at a time when concerns about national security have created an increased sense of urgency about ensuring that drugs to protect against radioactive material are available and that doctors know how to use them. Last month, Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Edward Markey called on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to have supplies of potassium iodide available within 200 miles of each of the country's 103 operating nuclear power plants in case the plants are attacked and radioactive material is released into the air.
