-Caveat Lector- <http://www.foxnews.com/politics/031001/clinton_bartletts.sml> Saturday, March 10, 2001 By Nick Schulz NEW YORK ‹ The utterances of former President Bill Clinton and New York Senator Hillary Clinton will be among the newest entries into Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Bartlett's is the popular and esteemed reference book for famous quotations published since 1855. The editor of Bartlett's, Justin Kaplan, revealed some of the quotes in an interview for Harvard Magazine. Both the former President and First Lady will have three entries each, but the former First Couple is unlikely to be pleased with the entries. The former President's quotes are: ‹ "I experimented with marijuana a time or two. And I didn't like it, and didn't inhale, and never tried it again." New York Times, March 31, 1992 ‹ "I am going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." Television interview, January 26, 1998 ‹ "It depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is. If the--if he--if "is" means is and never has been, that is not ‹ that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement." Grand jury testimony, August 17, 1998 There are no quotations from any of the former President's hundreds of speeches over the years on welfare, health care, foreign policy, taxes, or the size and role of government in society. Senator Clinton's entries, also unlikely to prompt an enthusiastic response from her supporters, are: ‹ "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas." Press interview on conflict of interest, March 17, 1992 ‹ "The great story...is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for President." Today, NBC-TV, January 27, 1998 ‹ "We've been married for 22 years. And I have learned a long time ago that the only two people who count in any marriage are the two who are in it." Ibid. But if the former President's and First Lady's supporters are unlikely to be pleased with these selections, that will come as no surprise to Kaplan. Kaplan is as familiar with controversy over his selections of familiar quotations as he is with the quotations themselves. The last edition of Bartlett's, published in 1992, drew criticism from supporters of former President Ronald Reagan. Reaganites thought that Kaplan shortchanged the former president. Former President Reagan was making his first appearance in Bartlett's and was given only three quotations. Reagan supporters, noting that the former President was known as "The Great Communicator," thought he had been shortchanged and pointed out that former Presidnet Jimmy Carter, not as widely known for his oratory, had twice as many entries. Reagan will have four quotations in the new edition. Adam Meyerson of the conservative Heritage Foundation and former editor of its flagship publication Policy Review criticized Kaplan for excluding Reagan's famous line from his speech at the Brandenburg Gate: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." That quotation will be included in the newest edition. The publisher of Bartlett's, Little Brown, did not return calls from FOXNews.com seeking a comment. Kaplan is still making additions and deletions to the manuscript and it is unclear at this time if the Clinton's entries will change before the 2002 edition hits the bookstores. But FOXNews.com wants to encourage our viewers to suggest some quotations that Bartlett's may have missed. If there are some quotations from the former first couple that belong in the new edition, please email FOXNews.com at "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" or click on the button below. FOXNews.com will post the best suggestions later in the week and will send your suggestions to Kaplan and the other editors at Bartlett's. ‹ Nick Schulz is the Politics Editor at FOXNews.com ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
